Case Study: “James” - Building Independence Through Assistive Technology

Background

“James,” aged 32, lives at home with his family and a dedicated team of carers. Although he had trialled assistive technology in the past, his team didn’t have the specialist input or ongoing support needed to use it effectively. As a result, James relied on blinking for yes/no responses, a method that limited his ability to express himself and was often misinterpreted.

When his family and case manager reached out to Berry Therapy, their goal was to help James communicate more reliably, participate in daily life, and connect with the world around him.

James faced several barriers to independence and communication. His yes/no responses were restrictive and often unclear. A vision impairment made eye-gaze access more complex but still achievable with specialist adaptation. His existing technology was not suited to his needs, and his environment limited his ability to explore his interests such as music, television, and videos of Howler Monkeys.

The key aims of our intervention were to create a reliable and accessible communication system tailored to James’s needs, increase his independence in everyday life and leisure, and build a strong collaborative approach between his family, careers, and case manager.

Berry Therapy adopted a holistic, neuro specialist approach, combining clinical expertise with creativity and technology to design solutions that truly worked for James.

Personalised Technology Setup

Eye-gaze access was precisely adjusted to accommodate James’s visual profile. A custom vocabulary gridset was created, allowing him to express choices, opinions, and interests beyond simple responses.

Environmental Access and Engagement

James’s Amazon Echo was connected with his AAC device, giving him control of his Firestick to open Disney+, YouTube, and other apps independently. Infrared TV control was built into his system for easy access to entertainment. His communication aid was mounted to his wheelchair for consistent accessibility, and a tailored YouTube page was developed featuring his favourite content, including music and Howler Monkeys.

Collaborative Support

We worked closely with James’s case manager, family, and carers to ensure they felt confident supporting his communication day to day. James was also referred for a vision assessment, and we began exploring switch access options based on reliable movements in his hands, to broaden his future interaction methods.

James now uses his custom gridset to communicate preferences and make requests such as new music or audiobooks. Through environmental control and adapted mounting, he can access entertainment and communication independently. He enjoys exploring YouTube and will soon use Audible to listen to stories. His family and care team feel empowered, confident, and supported in helping him maintain progress.

Our work with James continues to evolve. AAC and assistive technology are not one-time solutions but lifelong tools that grow with the person. Recently, James requested that stories be added to his system, so we are planning to integrate Audible to support this goal. This adaptive approach ensures his tools remain relevant and engaging as his interests and technology advance.

James’s parents shared:

“It’s incredible to see James exploring his favourite shows and music on his own. The collaboration with Berry Therapy has given us hope and opened new doors for James’s independence.”
